A Collaborative Journey in Dental Laser Development
Pioneering Soft Tissue Laser Systems
A top dental equipment manufacturer approached RPMC to develop a soft tissue laser system for applications like periodontal treatments and surgical procedures. Requiring a compact, high-power diode, they challenged us to deliver a custom solution that would enhance precision and usability in clinical settings. RPMC and LDX Optronics teamed up to meet this demand, leveraging LDX’s 30+ years of expertise in multimode laser diodes.
From Concept to Prototype: Rapid Laser Diode Solutions
Initial Design: 4W 808 nm Laser Diode
In March, the customer requested a 4W, 808 nm laser diode in a 9mm package. With no standard product meeting their needs, RPMC collaborated with LDX to develop a custom solution. By April, we delivered prototypes for evaluation, showcasing LDX’s ability to tailor diodes to specific wavelengths and power levels within the 445–1850 nm range, up to 40 W.
Evolving to Fiber-Coupled Precision
Testing revealed the need for a fiber-coupled design to ensure effective beam delivery without increasing package size or compromising handpiece functionality. By May, RPMC and LDX engineered three prototype variants with detachable fiber coupling and an integrated red aiming beam. The most successful variant, now a standard LDX offering, allowed housing in the desktop unit, optimizing heat management and enabling seamless delivery to an interchangeable handpiece for easy manipulation in the patient’s mouth.
Scaling Power to 5W for Enhanced Performance
By June, the customer identified fiber-related power losses, necessitating a 5W diode. RPMC and LDX rapidly developed thermally tested 5W packages, delivered by September. This enabled the customer to finalize their system, achieving market-ready production by November—a nine-month journey from concept to completion.
Scaling Success: From Production to Market Impact
Achieving Full Production in Nine Months
The collaboration’s efficiency allowed the customer to produce 250 units annually, delivering advanced soft tissue laser systems to dental practices. LDX’s rigorous quality protocols—wafer qualification, lifetime testing, and burn-in—ensured ultra-low failure rates, supporting reliable performance.
Second-Generation Innovation with Blue Aiming Beam
Two years later, user feedback prompted a second-generation system. The customer requested a blue aiming beam for better visibility against gums and a 50°C operating temperature increase. RPMC and LDX delivered this upgraded fiber-coupled package, maintaining the original design’s integrity. The result? Sales surged by 25%, reaching 320 units annually, proving the power of tailored solutions.
